I got to baptize my three youngest children. I remember Kristina's--my Mom missed it because she was hospitalized. I remember Mary's because I took the sermon I wrote, "A Letter to Mary" and made it into a brochure I still share with parents (and I'll repeat it Wednesday, Feb. 11, too). And Lizzy was at the last service at the church I started and served for 24 years.

My own baptism was on Christmas Day. I was born in August and my grandparents flew my parents and I to their home in Detroit at Christmas, and I was baptized in the church my dad grew up in. The church was very Danish, complete with the ship hanging from the ceiling as they do in Denmark to remember to pray for the sailors.
ReplyDeleteThe other baptism I remember vividly is my oldest godchild. She was 3 and her little sister 6 months old when they returned from military service in Germany, so they were baptized together. As a child, she later talked about it as "the time we went up to the front and you held my hand" - a special memory for the two of us.

My baptism was shared with 15 other babies, word has it I was the only one that was not crying. On my confirmation day my God Father gave me a frame that contains a dime he picked up in front of the church on the way into my baptism. I was baptized, confirmend and married by Pastor Grant at Faith Lutheran Church in St Paul.
ReplyDeleteI remember best the baptisms of my girls and of both my godsons. My older daughter was batized in the same church I grew up in and where I was married in northern Wisconsin, even though she was born in Wyoming (the state not the city). That was very meaningful for me, the continuity. Our younger daughter was born on Mother's Day and baptized on Father's Day and both grandpas got to come to the church in Laramie for that--both grandmas as well. It was so special to have everyone together as we dedicated those new lives to God.
ReplyDeleteMy godsons are 14 years apart--one lives here in the cities and the 2-year-old lives in Madison. At this time in my life, I am determined to be an even better godmother and to share more of the testimony of my life with my godsons. They know I love them and I think that love is sometimes the best testimony of all.

I am about to get my 3 month daughter baptized this Sunday at St. Marks and I am so excited. My husband and I hope that it will inspire us to become more involved in the church and to truly raise her as a child of God. She will be wearing a baptismal gown that has been passed down through our family for 50 years-I was also baptized in it. It will be such a special event for our new little family (especially since Pastor Steve married us about a year ago and now he will be baptizing our daughter)and one that I'm sure we will never forget!
